Treaty Summary:

The Waigani Convention bans the importation of hazardous and radioactive wastes into Forum Island Countries (FICs). The Convention also provides for a commitment to reduce the generation of hazardous wastes to a minimum. A system is established for dealing with the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes within the South Pacific region, including notification procedures, cooperation in treatment and disposal within the region, and for the sharing of information on illegal trade. The Convention prohibits the export of hazardous waste from New Zealand and Australia into the Convention area in the South Pacific, but does allow imports from the Pacific Island developing parties into New Zealand and Australia. New Caledonia and French Polynesia are French territories and so come under the Basel Convention, rather than the Waigani Convention.  See <www.mfe.govt.nz>.
