The purpose of the Convention is the protection of cultural property. Parties to the Convention designate items of archaeological, historic, literary, artistic, or scientific importance as ÔÇ£cultural propertyÔÇØ for the purposes of the Convention. The Convention then establishes a framework for cooperative action between States Parties for the prevention of unauthorised trade in that cultural property and the return of illicitly traded cultural property through diplomatic channels.
