Treaty Summary:
The Registration Convention is a binding treaty, and accession makes it mandatory for New Zealand as a launching State to establish and maintain a register for space objects launched into outer space. Under Article IV of the Registration Convention, New Zealand is required to provide to the UN Secretary-General, as soon as practicable, specified information concerning each space object carried on its registry (the name of launching State or States, an appropriate designator of the space object or its registration number, the date and territory or location of launch; basic orbital parameters, including: nodal period; (ii) inclination; (iii) apogee; (iv) perigee; and general function of the space object).
Accession to the Registration Convention signals that New Zealand is a responsible launching State; and provides a mechanism to agree with other State Parties on who should register, and retain jurisdiction and control, over a space object.
