Due to commercial pressures, the member governments of the International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT) decided in 1998 to restructure INMARSAT into a company to manage all operational and commercial activities (this company has already been formed). A small intergovernmental organisation, the International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO), retains a role, primarily to supervise provision of the of Global Maritime Distress and Safety Services (GMDSS).
